Short History of The Sandhurst Shores Ratepayers'

Post by Admin on Wed Oct 12, 2016 9:41 am

History of Sandhurst Shores.

At the Annual General Meeting held 14 April 2016, the Executive had decided to pay tribute to past Executive Committees to improve our general understanding of our community’s history. By doing so it was hoped that our community members would understand the importance of maintaining membership in the The Sandhurst Shores Ratepayers' as a means to continue to meet our responsibilities under the Deed for Percy Clarkson Park to retain it for the exclusive use of the residents of Sandhurst Shores as a private park.

A summary of that presentation is as follows:
(1) 1962. Application by Percy Clarkson to create a new sub-division is approved by Queen’s Park;
(2) prior to 1973. Sand Shores Ltd. commenced construction of basic infrastructure;
(3) 1973. Forty-Three homes completed, new residents consider need for an association;
(4) 1974. Percy Clarkson invests his personal capital to build streets and water pump-house. Lots are sold to Rollins Construction who are bound by deed to build and sell residential homes.
(5) 1975. Lot B was partitioned. Newly formed SSRA were presented with two options by Percy Clarkson: Option 1, the new partitioned lot would be turned over to South Fredericksburgh to be managed as a public park open to everyone; or Option 2, he would deed the partition to the SSRA for $1 who would take full responsibility for it’s management and maintenance for the sole purpose of using the property as a private park available to SSRA members only. By majority vote, the SSRA accepted option 2.
(6) 1976. SSRA Chair (Dave Faskin) addressed the South Fredericksburgh Municipal Council in an attempt to have them fully assume maintenance and snow removal responsibilities for the sub-division;
(7) 1977. SSRA are granted Letters Patent by the Province of Ontario issuing a Charter to the Executive of the SSRA constituting them as a corporation without share capital.
(Cool 1979. Percy Clarkson signs the Deed to convey Part Lot B to the SSRA for $1.00 for their sole use forever so long as it is used as a park and not other or it reverts to Percy Clarkson or his heirs.
(9) 1980s. Throughout the decade of the eighties, the SSRA constructed the playground, installed the dock, built a horseshoe pit and set up other recreational facilities to meet the growing needs of the community. Volunteers continued to maintain the parkland and shoreline for the benefit of all.
(10) 1990s. From the late 80s into the 1990s the SSRA struggled with the municipal authorities to get them to properly maintain the streets, install some streetlights at the front, maintain the culverts and drainage system, build a turn lane at the community entrance and to operate and maintain the water purification facility.
(11) Present. The SSRA Executive continues to represent all community residents with respect to improvements to our roads, taxation issues and maintenance of Percy Clarkson Park.
